Did you catch the live broadcast of Training Talk on Personal Defense Network last night? If not, you missed a phenomenal show all about knife defense. Don’t worry, though, because you can still watch the replay!
My guest was Alessandro Padovani of Safer Faster Defense. I consider Alessandro to be THE master of the defensive use of the knife and one of the single best teachers I know in the defensive training world. He travels all over the United States (and several other countries) teaching his unique approach to self defense. His particular expertise is in using a knife to defend yourself, as well defending against a knife-wielding attacker.
The show revolved around his recent series of PDN articles, titled “Emotional Components of Knife Defense.” We talked about many aspects of the knife as a defensive tool as well as training and mindset. He went in depth in his analysis of why an emotional reaction to a blade can be detrimental to your self defense, as well as how to mitigate those reactions and train through them. In fact, the discussion about mindset alone is pure gold! It’s not the usual “warrior sheepdog” bravado nonsense, but an intelligent talk about what mindset is and how it can be trained. Alessandro has a very deep understanding of his subject matter and how to teach it, and that comes through in our talk.
Even if you’re not interested in using a knife in self defense, you’ll learn a lot from this show. For instance, how and why the emotional baggage of the blade can affect your ability to protect yourself. We cover a wide range of topics, including reality based training and stress inoculation. If you’re an instructor you especially need to listen to all of the teaching nuggets Alessandro drops into the conversation. Alessandro has a very deep understanding of his subject matter and how to teach it, and that comes through in our talk.
