Vera Koo: a role model for young shooters.

Do you know the name Vera Koo? If you have daughters, you should. This lady should be their role model.
Female shooters get a lot of press today. I’d venture to say that just about everyone reading this blog would recognize the names Lena Miculek, Julie Golob, Jessie Duff, Randi Rogers, and Tori Nonaka because of their accomplishments on the range.

There are some women in the shooting sports, however, who inexplicably get little to no press coverage. One of those is Vera Koo, who started shooting at the age of 45 and now, at age 67, is still winning matches. She holds a record eight Bianchi wins plus two World Woman championship titles. Not bad for getting a late start at the game!

One of the things I like about her is the fact that she’s such a study in contrasts: she’s tough yet refined, a ferocious competitor without being impolite, determined yet approachable. (The fact that she’s a shooter from the San Francisco area is an incongruity all to itself!) She reminds me so much of what I’ve read about Annie Oakley, who displayed many of those characteristics. Koo brings a grace to the shooting sports that we don’t often see and virtually never celebrate.

Chris Cheng over at The Firearm Blog recently posted a great interview with Vera Koo. It’s worth reading.
