This is a scary story, and you need to read it

Spring has finally sprung in Oregon, and I’m celebrating with a great collection of articles for all aspects of your defense, safety, and preparedness!

This article is dumb. Read it anyway.

Why do I say it’s dumb? Because these are five types of people you should ALWAYS avoid, whether you’re carrying or not! (Remember John Farnam’s famous advice: Don’t go to stupid places, do stupid ...

It’s Wednesday again, and here are more great self defense, travel safety, and preparedness articles for you to peruse while you wait for Friday to arrive!

Is there such a thing as “too many flashlights”?

Probably not, as John Farnam explains. I’ll deviate from his recommendations just a bit, though, and suggest that having fewer but higher quality lights is really the way ...

In this week’s List you’ll find: a great review of my Threat Centered Revolver course; a look at the .22WMR revolver as a defensive option; another idiot shoots and kills someone he didn’t need to shoot at in the first place; some instructors don’t teach, they operate a buffet; how not to be seen (and therefore targeted); how to tell when things ...

Online course review: Interactions With Law Enforcement While Armed from Personal Defense Network Academy

I’ll admit to being a little skeptical about this course when I first heard about it. I’ve sat in on a number of seminars covering this topic over the years, and frankly I didn’t really think it was a suitable subject for a standalone course. I ...

Rob Pincus and Bob Owens arguing over the Weaver stance: a critical analysis of the controversy.

Posted by:

About a week ago, Rob Pincus put up a video at Personal Defense Network regarding the use of the Weaver Stance in defensive shooting. Bob Owens at BearingArms apparently took exception to Pincus’ points and posted a personal invective at his own site titled “OH, DEAR: Rob Pincus Doesn’t Understand The Weaver Position.”

Rob asked me to take a look at both his video and Owen’s article; he said, and this is an exact quote from his email, that “I want an ...

.22LR rifle reviews suck. Here’s why.

Posted by:

The other day I posted an article to social media about Eley’s newest .22LR hunting ammunition, suggesting that people who’ve never tried really good rimfire ammo haven’t a clue how much difference in performance it can make in their rifles. That comment reminded me of a .22 rifle “test” I read a couple of months ago, one which reinforced a simple fact:

.22 rifle reviews suck.

Darned near all of them, anyhow (and I’m only hedging my bets on the off chance that ...

Personal Defense When The Gun Fails DVD

By Rob Pincus
Published by Personal Defense Network

This DVD was something of a surprise, largely because I didn’t quite know what to expect. When I saw the title “Personal Defense When The Gun Fails”, I immediately thought about malfunctions and remediation drills — and while the DVD touches on those, it goes well beyond them and includes some fresh ideas about how to look at the idea of a failure.

The theme of the ...

AR-15 Optics DVD

Everyone, it seems, has an AR-15 these days and all of them have need for a good sighting system. There are lots of choices in the market, and this DVD attempts to make sense of the various choices by showing their strong and weak points relative to the job of personal protection at relatively close range.

It’s important to start off by saying that the material isn’t at all specific ...

Defensive DVD Review: Defensive Mindset with Rob Pincus

Review: Defensive Mindset DVD

Over the years there has been much written and said on the topic of the defensive mindset. Many defensive shooting courses start with and claim to develop such a mindset, but usually amount to little more than trite sayings and broad exhortations.

Call me jaded if you will, but to be honest that’s what I was expecting when this DVD arrived in my mailbox. It was a pleasant surprise to find something very different than what I anticipated!

“Best 100-Round Practice Session” DVD

Presented by Rob Pincus
I.C.E. Training

One of the questions all instructors get frequently is “how should I practice?” In this DVD, Rob Pincus shows what he considers to be a solid practice session even if you only have an hour and 100 rounds of ammunition to spare. It’s an interesting approach to the subject, but just how much valid practice can you do with two boxes of ammunition?

As it turns out, quite a bit!

Meopta Optics, Part 1: the M-RAD red dot sight

Early in The Bullpup Experiment I mentioned that I had a few issues with the stock Steyr optic: while a good product, it fit neither my physical make-up nor my eyesight issues. I also mentioned that I contacted the folks at Meopta Sports Optics to find an alternative, and that they had sent out a couple of their products for me to use and abuse as part of my little experiment. Today I’d like to tell you a little ...

The Bullpup Rifle Experiment, Part 1: why would I do such a thing?

Posted by:

As you may know, I’m a proponent of the rifle as a defensive tool — particularly for what I refer to as “perimeter defense”, which are threats at distances beyond which we think of the pistol as a more suitable tool, and for defense of a fortified or ensconced position (like being barricaded in your safe room.) The rifle’s greater power, greater precision, and corresponding ability to deliver both at extended distances makes it a formidable tool in the correct ...
