I have no social media accounts; all purported ones are fake.

On the Umpqua Community College killings.

On the Umpqua Community College killings.

I’ve had numerous emails and messages asking me what I know about the killings which took place in my backyard this morning.

What I can tell you is that I have relatives and friends in Roseburg, some of whom are hurting tonight. Evil came to a beautiful part of the country — my part of the country — and found some people unprepared. That’s what evil likes; it thrives in those environments.

I’m not going to advocate for more gun control, nor am I going to repeat the nonsensical “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” Both are ridiculous positions to take, because they both deny reality. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m not big on denying reality.

What I’m going to focus on is what I’ve always focused on: helping ordinary people be a little more prepared should they come face to face with evil, no matter what its form.

I think it’s the best thing we can all do to honor the memories of the fallen.
